On Wednesday 11th February, Year 2 went on a trip to Powderham Castle.
We had a Victorian Experience Day and a tour of the castle by the butler.
One of the activities was being in a Victorian kitchen and acting as a kitchen boy or scullery maid. We learnt what jobs would have been done in the 1900’s during the Victorian times at Powderham Castle. Children started working in the castle as early as 12 years old! In the kitchen they may have ‘’used sugar, cinnamon, an egg, butter, flour and currants to make griddle cakes” (Ben, 2CM).
As a house keeper and servant, the children learnt how to perform many castle duties. These included ironing tea towels, making paper twists, scrubbing the floors, beating rugs and “polishing boots with a brush” (Bailey, 2W).
On our tour around the castle we found secret doors, a library full of books and we even say Lady Devon herself!
Below are a few photos of our trip.
